Lion’s were a significant part of early Hollywood – the most famous, MGM from it’s start in 1917 has used a lion as it’s mascot. In the silent era they were used for both comic and dramatic effect. Possibly one of the most dramatic -Gloria Swanson’s film “Male and Female” (1919). In one scene she has a lion laying on her bare back.
