Mount Rushmore was originally supposed to be much larger and more elaborate than it is. Here, the monument’s designer, Gutzon Borglum is seen scrutinizing the scale model in 1926. Only the heads were completed, as the project ran out of money. Borglum had also planned to make a secret room behind the hairline of Abraham Lincoln which was supposed to be a doorway to a chamber intended to hold some of America’s most treasured documents. It was left unfinished due to his death in 1941.
